Building Before Constructing

The trip will take all day by safari vehicle. They might cross paths with giraffes grazing among the acacia trees; will drink up the fresh savannah air and eat a bit of road dust too; they might take on a passenger or two who will squeeze into the back of the land rover next to the Maasai elders who are traveling north. I wonder if these elders have ever ridden in a vehicle before. And if so, what must that be like – gazing out of a safari vehicle through the eyes of a Maasai elder?

Our partner, Wilson Lengima, and staff from Angelika Wohlenberg’s organization will be taking elders from the future school site to visit Angelika’s boarding school in the far north of Tanzania. This will give the elders the opportunity to observe school in session and to ask questions of teachers, students, parents and villagers. They’ll have time to walk the paths of the local village and understand the kinds of changes that occur when a school is built in a Maasai village. When they return, Angelika and Wilson will spend the night in tents and show the Jesus film. More than a year ago, the elders asked us to partner with them to build a faith based school. After visiting Angelika’s school, they will have a greater understanding of what that means. Then all will sit down together again to talk, to listen, to plan, to make sure that all are in agreement before beginning construction. You could say they’re building before constructing – building a foundation of communication and understanding before the first brick is laid. Our thoughts and prayers will be with them.
